Aluminum circles per ton: calculator and chart

Circles are used by the piece but quoted by the ton. Enter diameter, thickness, alloy and your order, and get the weight of each circle and how many circles make a metric ton and your order. A 12 in circle at 0.040 in weighs about 0.44 lb (0.20 kg): about 4,980 circles per metric ton at 2.71 g/cm³.

Units

Densities from The Aluminum Association (August 2018); other alloys use 2.71 g/cm³.

How it is calculated

Circle weight = π/4 × diameter² × thickness × density. In pounds, with inches: 0.7854 × diameter² × thickness × 0.0979 lb/in³ (2.71 g/cm³). Circles per metric ton = 2,204.6 lb ÷ weight of one circle. A 12 in circle at 0.040 in in 1100 weighs 0.7854 × 12² × 0.040 × 0.0979 = 0.44 lb (0.20 kg): about 4,980 circles per metric ton.

The calculation is for the finished circle. It does not include the skeleton left after blanking circles from sheet or coil, which depends on how the circles are nested and on the strip width. Actual weight varies with thickness tolerance.

How many aluminum circles are in a ton?

It depends on diameter and thickness: about 11,200 circles of 8 in at 0.040 in, 4,980 of 12 in at 0.040 in or 1,140 of 20 in at 0.063 in per metric ton, at 2.71 g/cm³. Double the diameter and each circle weighs four times as much, so four times fewer fit in a ton.

In 5000 series the maximum diameter is 36 in, so the 40 and 48 in rows apply to 1000 and 3000 series. For the exact count at your size and alloy, use the calculator.

Circle sizes Almexa makes

Per its September 2026 technical sheet, Almexa blanks circles from its own coil, 0.0220 to 0.1575 in (0.56 to 4.0 mm) thick and 5.51 to 48 in (140 to 1,219 mm) in diameter in 1000 and 3000 series, up to 36 in (914 mm) in 5000 series. For deep drawing and spinning, 1050 or 1100 in O temper; for parts that need more stiffness, 3004 or 3105. They usually ship in mill finish; non-stick or paint on request.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an aluminum circle weigh?

A 12 in circle at 0.040 in weighs about 0.44 lb (0.20 kg), and a 20 in circle at 0.125 in about 3.8 lb (1.7 kg), at 2.71 g/cm³. Weight grows with the square of the diameter: double the diameter, four times the weight.

How do I turn my circle usage into tons?

Multiply the pieces by the weight of one circle and divide by 2,204.6 lb per metric ton. For example, 20,000 circles of 12 in at 0.040 in weigh about 8,860 lb, that is 4.02 metric tons. The calculator does it with your diameter, thickness and alloy.

What circle sizes does Almexa make?

5.51 to 48 in (140 to 1,219 mm) in diameter in 1000 and 3000 series and up to 36 in (914 mm) in 5000 series, 0.0220 to 0.1575 in (0.56 to 4.0 mm) thick, per the September 2026 technical sheet.

Does the calculation include blanking scrap?

No. The calculator gives the weight of the finished circle; the skeleton left after blanking depends on how the circles are nested and on the strip width, so it is not included here.
