Aluminum for roofing and gutters: 3105 or 3003, temper and gauge
For roofing, roof decks and gutters the most common alloy is 3105: it contains manganese and magnesium, has equal or slightly higher strength than 3003 and takes paint well. 3003 fits profiles with heavy forming or tight bends. As a reference, roll-formed profiles run 0.024 to 0.040 in (0.6 to 1.0 mm) in 3105 H14, and gutters and trims 0.020 to 0.040 in (0.5 to 1.0 mm) (Almexa, October 2026). Almexa supplies coil and strip at your roll former's width, 0.0177 to 0.1575 in (0.45 to 4.0 mm) thick and up to 48 in (1,219 mm) wide, in mill finish ready for your paint line and with a mill test report per lot.

Aluminum for roofing and gutters is formed on a roll former: the coil or strip runs through stands of rolls that bend it step by step into the roofing panel or gutter profile. That is why it is bought as coil, at the exact width the machine needs.
3105 or 3003 for roofing?
Both work. 3105 is the most common for roofing, roof decks, gutters and sheet for painting. 3003 fits parts with heavy forming or tight bends. Almexa makes both in coil, strip and sheet.
| Item | 3105 | 3003 |
|---|---|---|
| Main alloying elements | 0.30 to 0.8% manganese and 0.20 to 0.8% magnesium | 1.0 to 1.5% manganese and 0.05 to 0.20% copper |
| Density | 2.72 g/cm³ | 2.73 g/cm³ |
| Strength | Equal to or slightly higher than 3003 | Higher than 1100, with almost the same formability |
| When to order it | Roofing, roof decks, gutters and sheet for painting | Profiles with heavy forming or tight bends |
| At Almexa | Coil and strip 0.0177 to 0.1575 in, sheet from 0.0197 in, up to 48 in wide | Coil and strip 0.0177 to 0.1575 in, sheet from 0.0197 in, up to 48 in wide |

Which gauge and temper to order
As a reference, roll-formed roofing profiles run 0.024 to 0.040 in (0.6 to 1.0 mm) in 3105 H14, and gutters, soffits and trims 0.020 to 0.040 in (0.5 to 1.0 mm). H14 temper lets the profile bend in the roll former without cracking; for very tight bends, a softer temper or 3003 fits better. The profile, the span between supports and the project's requirements set the final gauge.
How many feet are in a metric ton
Coil is quoted by the metric ton and roofing is sold by the foot. This table turns one metric ton (1,000 kg, 2,204.6 lb) into square feet and linear feet at 2.71 g/cm³; actual weight varies with the thickness tolerance.
| Gauge | lb/ft² | ft² per metric ton | Linear ft of 48 in coil | Linear ft of 15 in strip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.020 in (0.51 mm) | 0.282 | 7,819 | 1,955 | 6,255 |
| 0.024 in (0.61 mm) | 0.338 | 6,516 | 1,629 | 5,212 |
| 0.027 in (0.69 mm) | 0.381 | 5,792 | 1,448 | 4,633 |
| 0.032 in (0.81 mm) | 0.451 | 4,887 | 1,222 | 3,909 |
| 0.040 in (1.02 mm) | 0.564 | 3,909 | 977 | 3,127 |
Strip width is your profile's developed width
The width you order is the sum of every segment of the profile measured flat, plus whatever your roll former needs. Almexa slits coil to that width on its 3 slitting lines, from coil up to 48 in (1,219 mm) wide; the slitting calculator shows how many strips each coil yields and how much scrap is left. Coil ships with a 20 in (508 mm) inside diameter and a 39 to 46 in (990.6 to 1,168 mm) outside diameter: check that your uncoiler takes it.
How Almexa supplies it
As coil from 6.30 to 48 in (160 to 1,219 mm) wide, strip slit to your width and cut-to-length sheet from 0.0197 to 0.1575 in (0.5 to 4.0 mm), in 3105 and 3003, in mill finish ready for your paint line. Almexa does not sell painted sheet or finished corrugated roofing: it supplies the aluminum to the companies that paint and roll-form it. Every lot ships with a mill test report with chemistry and mechanical properties.
What to send for a quote
- Alloy and temper, or the profile and its use.
- Gauge and tolerance.
- Strip width, which is your profile's developed width, and its tolerance.
- The inside diameter your uncoiler takes and the maximum outside diameter or coil weight.
- Metric tons per month and whether you will paint the material.

Frequently asked questions
Which aluminum alloy is used for roofing sheet?
3105 is the most common for roofing, roof decks and gutters: it contains manganese and magnesium, has equal or slightly higher strength than 3003 and takes paint well. 3003 fits profiles with heavy forming or tight bends. Almexa makes both in coil, strip and sheet.
What gauge aluminum is used for gutters?
As a reference, 0.020 to 0.040 in (0.5 to 1.0 mm) in 3105. Gutter size and hanger spacing set the final gauge. Almexa supplies strip at your roll former's width from 0.0177 in (0.45 mm).
How many square feet of aluminum sheet are in a metric ton?
About 6,516 ft² at 0.024 in (0.61 mm) and 4,887 ft² at 0.032 in (0.81 mm), at 2.71 g/cm³. On 48 in wide coil that is about 1,629 and 1,222 linear feet.
Does Almexa sell painted or corrugated roofing sheet?
No. Almexa makes coil and strip in mill finish and supplies them to the companies that paint and roll-form roofing panels and gutters.
