Net saving of resources
Aluminum paper applied to food and beverages packaging saves more resources than the ones used for its production. Many life cycle analyses (LCA) show that aluminum paper used for containers and at home account for less than 10% of environmental impact in the life cycle of a product: production, preparation and consumption.
The total insulation of aluminum paper against light, gases and humidity is the main reason it is used in flexible laminated containers for food, beverages and technical applications. Even though it is very thin, it guarantees the perfect protection and preservation of the aroma and characteristics of the product. It can contribute to lengthen the life of delicate products by many months or even years, completely preserving their valuable aroma. Allowing products to preserve during long periods without need of refrigeration, aluminum paper containers contribute to the prevention of deterioration, and are able to provide great energy savings.
Light but strong; the characteristic that makes aluminum paper unique is its capacity to maintain its shape, a quality that makes it ideal for containing and re-containing of products with any kind of shape; as it reduces to a minimum the need to use glues or sealing. Thanks to its malleability it can be formed easily without losing its insulating capacity, thus it results in an ideal material for creating very fine sheets that, in combination with other flexible substrates, find application in a wide variety of markets and, in consequence, save resources once more.
Plasticity and resistance
When pressured against a mold, aluminum paper memorizes its shape, especially where it has folds and edges. Thereby the shape, thickness, alloys and quenching needed can be selected for creating the performance characteristics desired.
Lightness and space utilization
Transportation and storage can be cheapened considerably thanks to its lightness and the flat or rolled format of the empty containers; and in the case of the containers of aluminum paper, thanks to its stacking forms, especially useful for cartridge filling machines. Aluminum paper contributes to save resources during the packaging process and product and waste transportation.
Allowing products to be preserved for long periods without the need of refrigeration, aluminum paper provides great energy savings, as thanks to its shape it uses the space in an efficient way when storing and exhibiting articles in stands, thereby it makes possible a bigger energy and cost saving. Aluminum paper is effective, saves weight and minimizes the quantity of material necessary.
In light honeycomb structures, aluminum imparts stiffness and stability needed allowing architects to lighten the construction of structures and foundations and, engineers to save weight in any kind of transport such as ships, planes, trucks and cars.
Aluminum is 100% recyclable, without any expiration date or any quality loss. The recycling process of aluminum requires 95% less energy when compared to its production from alumina and bauxite ore, which also carries a huge emission reduction. Modern recycling techniques allow for the extraction of aluminum paper from domestic residues and recycling it for a minimal percentage of its original energy cost.
Cooking and heating in any way
Food preserved in aluminum paper plates can be cooked or reheated in convection and fan ovens or microwaves or with “bain marie” systems. Aluminum paper containers contribute to save time and resources during food preparation.
Once produced, aluminum paper is completely sterile thanks to the high temperatures that it reaches on its cooking process. It’s a safe material to use in contact with food products because it doesn’t harbor or allow the creation of bacteria.
Safety and product integrity
Aluminum paper is a safe material to use in contact with food products. Natural aluminum paper does not react with the majority of foods. In many applications, aluminum paper does not have direct contact with the product because it is processed with other materials to form a laminate. Also, it constitutes an ideal protection against product alteration and contributes to fight against forgery.
The bright or matte metallic finish of aluminum paper, besides its compatibility with every printing technique, offers designers huge possibilities of creating containers with an amazing graphic design and great presence during its exposition, which gives the brand its identity.
Aluminum paper reflects up to 98% of light and infrared heat. Also, the bright surface follows a low heat emission, which saves energy in the insulating process. Its insulating properties also extend to protection against fires. In the fireproof screens for vehicles and ships, or fireproof construction doors and panels, aluminum paper dissipates the heat and blocks the access to oxygen necessary to fuel flames.
Aluminum paper also screens against frequent magnetic and radio-electric transmissions. In fiber optical wires, aluminum paper is used as indicator to prove the integrity of the connections. In a network wire, the electrical conductivity of the aluminum allows to verify the circuit integrity.
